OMVIC is currently searching for a Financial Compliance Inspector.
Who is OMVIC?
OMVIC (Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council) is Ontario’s vehicle sales regulator. OMVIC enforces the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act and other consumer protection statutes for the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement. OMVIC’s mandate and role is to maintain a fair and informed marketplace by protecting the rights of consumers, enhancing industry professionalism, and ensuring fair, honest, and open competition for registered motor vehicle dealers. This is achieved by maintaining strict dealer/salesperson registration requirements; inspecting all Ontario dealers (new and used); providing free complaint handling to consumers; developing/delivering consumer and dealer education/awareness programs; and investigating and prosecuting industry non-compliance and illegal sales (curbsiding).

Position Summary:
The Financial Compliance Inspector is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Motor Vehicle Dealer Act 2002 (MVDA) and certain aspects of the Consumer Protection Act by all registered dealerships and salespersons in Ontario.
The role of the Financial Compliance Inspector is to assess and review the financial practices, statements, and operations of a business to determine its financial viability and ensure adherence to regulations, laws, and industry standards.
Responsibilities:
- Perform financial statement bench reviews for compliance with Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 2002 and Ontario Regulation 333/08, verifying financial stability and compliance through examination of financial transactions and documents.
- Analyze balance sheets, income statements, cash flow, and financial reports to assess overall financial health, conduct financial risk assessments, identify control weaknesses, and recommend improvements.
- Educate dealers on OMVIC’s expectations, legislation, and compliance policies, and recommend best practices for dealership governance.
- Prepare inspection reports and summaries and following up on previous inspections.
- Testify at Court and Licensing Appeals Tribunal (LAT), respond to complex inquiries about consumer entitlements and legislation, and refer registrants to other organizations for issues outside OMVIC’s mandate.
- Provide consultative advice to OMVIC staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or Auditing (or equivalent) with 5+ years’ experience.
- Preferred accreditation: CPA, CIA, CFE, CICA; forensic accounting or internal auditing experience is an asset.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills; ability to evaluate complex financial statements and ledgers.
- Experience with regulatory compliance, law enforcement, and interpreting legislation; knowledge of MVDA 2002 and Consumer Protection Act is an asset.
- Strong organizational, communication, and conflict resolution skills; ability to lead/manage inspections and conduct interviews.
- Understanding of rules of evidence and proper evidence collection.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with motor vehicle dealership environment is an asset.
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team; valid class ‘G’ driver’s license, own vehicle with business coverage insurance, and willingness to travel.
- Multilingual skills are an asset.
