OMVIC is now accepting applications from experienced leaders to contribute to Ontario’s automotive industry by joining the OMVIC Board of Directors or the Discipline and Appeals Tribunals. These are unique opportunities to support OMVIC’s mission of protecting consumers and promoting professionalism in Ontario’s motor vehicle sales industry.

OMVIC Board of Directors

  • One (1) Public Director – Must not be involved in the motor vehicle sales industry 
  • One (1) Industry Director – Must be a motor vehicle dealer, salesperson, or an individual affiliated with a registered dealer or industry association 

Directors will be elected for three-year terms at OMVIC’s Annual Meeting on June 12, 2025

Discipline and Appeals Tribunals

  • Two (2) Directors or Officers of new or used car dealerships 

Tribunal members will be appointed for three-year terms in May 2025 by the OMVIC Board of Directors.

About OMVIC

OMVIC is a not-for-profit corporation responsible for regulating motor vehicle sales in Ontario through administering and enforcing provisions of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2002 (MVDA) and its regulations. OMVIC’s mandate is to maintain a fair and informed marketplace by protecting the rights of consumers, enhancing industry professionalism and ensuring fair, honest and open competition for registered motor vehicle dealers. 

Role of the Board and Tribunals

OMVIC Board of Directors

The Board oversees OMVIC’s mandate to regulate Ontario’s motor vehicle sales industry. Directors play a vital role in: 

  • Shaping the organization’s strategic direction. 
  • Providing financial oversight. 
  • Supporting outreach and advocacy efforts. 
  • Acting as ambassadors for OMVIC’s mission of consumer protection and industry professionalism. 

The Board is made up of nine members: three elected from the motor vehicle sales industry, three from the general public, and three appointed by the Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement. 

Discipline and Appeals Tribunals

The Tribunals uphold industry standards by: 

  • Resolving issues referred by OMVIC’s Registrar. 

The Tribunal is currently made up of thirteen members, consisting of six public and seven industry representatives. These members ensure a fair and transparent process, contributing to the integrity and professionalism of Ontario’s automotive industry. Eligibility Criteria

Board of Directors

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria: 

Industry Director: 

  • Be an Ontario resident or registered with OMVIC, if applicable. 
  • Be at least 18 years of age.  
  • Have at least five years of active involvement in the motor vehicle sales industry as a motor vehicle dealer, salesperson, or affiliated individual (i.e., director, officer, or employee of a registered motor vehicle dealer or industry association). 
  • Pass background checks, including Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC), social media and dealership inspections (if applicable). 

Public Director: 

  • Be an Ontario resident. 
  • Be at least 18 years of age.  
  • Not have any direct personal or business interest in the motor vehicle sales industry. 
  • Pass background checks, including the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) and social media. 

OMVIC is seeking applications from individuals with a broad range of skills, perspectives and expertise as outlined in the Board’s Skills, Knowledge and Experience Profile and is particularly interested in public director candidates who possess the following competencies: 

  • Customer Service Delivery – Government: Understanding of government operations, service delivery challenges, and fiscal/bureaucratic constraints. 
  • Technical Training: Knowledge of course design, relevance, testing, and accessibility. 
  • IT Governance: Knowledge of cybersecurity, privacy, social media, reputation management, IT project oversight, and emerging technology impacts. 
  • Legal/Regulatory: Familiarity with marketplace regulation, due process, enforcement limitations, and legal frameworks. 

All directors must possess a positive orientation toward consumer protection initiatives. 

Tribunals

To qualify, applicants must: 

  • Be a director or officer actively registered with OMVIC for at least two years. 
  • Understand the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act (MVDA), including the Code of Ethics. 
  • Demonstrate good character, honesty, and financial responsibility. 
  • Possess strong skills in analysis, writing, and communication. 
  • Be neutral and impartial in discipline proceedings. 
  • Commit to fair and transparent processes. 
  • Have no history of discipline under the Code of Ethics or convictions for industry-related offences. 
  • Support consumer protection and industry professionalism, with experience in protecting consumers’ rights. 
  • Cooperate fully with business premises or financial records inspections to ensure MVDA compliance. 

Commitment

Board of Directors

Directors are elected at the Annual Meeting for a three-year term and may be re-elected, with total consecutive years of service capped at nine years. Directors attend six to eight in-person Board meetings annually (three hours each) and serve on at least one committee, which meets virtually six to eight times yearly (two and a half hours each). Additional commitments include 2–3 days per year for strategy or development sessions and time for meeting preparation. A minimum 75% attendance rate at Board meetings is required. 

Tribunals

Tribunal members are appointed for three-year terms and typically serve on both Tribunals. Meetings are held on an ad hoc basis, with members expected to attend one to three meetings or training days annually. Depending on the complexity and scheduling, panel participation may require multiple days per hearing. While the majority of meetings and hearings are conducted virtually, some in-person participation may be required. 

Compensation 

Board and Tribunal members receive per-diem compensation and reimbursement for reasonable expenses, subject to OMVIC’s Board Remuneration Policy and Travel and Meal Expense Reimbursement Policy. 

The submission deadline for all applications is Friday, March 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. 

Selection Process

Board of Directors

The Governance and Nominating Committee, guided by the Director Nomination and Election Policy, will review the applications, and interviews may be conducted if required. The list of candidates recommended by the Governance and Nominating Committee will be approved by the Board of Directors and shared with the dealer members for election at OMVIC’s Annual Meeting.  

Tribunals

The Governance and Nominating Committee of the OMVIC Board of Directors, guided by the Discipline and Appeals Tribunals Terms of Reference and Skills Matrix, will review all applications, and interviews and background checks will be conducted with shortlisted candidates if required. Qualified candidates will be recommended to the OMVIC Board of Directors for appointment.
