As the regulator of motor vehicle sales in Ontario, OMVIC’s mandate is to maintain a fair and informed marketplace by protecting the rights of consumers, enhancing industry professionalism and ensuring fair, honest and open competition for registered motor vehicle dealers.
The Code of Ethics is mandated through legislation with the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2002 (MVDA). Each OMVIC Registrants (both dealers and salespersons) must adhere to the standards detailed in Code of Ethics and agrees to abide by its language and intent.

In some cases, a violation of the MVDA, Consumer Protection Act (CPA), or certain other laws will result in a salesperson or dealer being formally charged with an offence and prosecuted under the Provincial Offences Act (POA).
This Act incorporates specific conditions into most contracts between buyers and sellers for the sale of goods in Ontario, including that the goods are fit for a specific purpose and of merchantable quality.
